My journey in chiropractic started when I was only twelve years old. Growing up, my parents noticed that my back didn’t look like other kids’. My lower back was a deep, hallow curve that made my stomach protrude from my body to compensate for the sway. My parents took me to the hospital where my doctor informed my parents and I that I had what is called a “swayed back.” He warned me that this hereditary condition could lead to scoliosis if left untreated. Yet none of the doctors offered any remedy to help me. No medication, no physical therapy, no surgeries, nothing.
The only thing they could offer was to take x-rays of my back every two years to monitor the progress of my condition. And so began the blur of appointments. At the time, I was so young that I didn’t really understand what was going on. I simple did as I was told, trusting the medical professionals, and living my own life. Eventually I turned twelve, and when the doctors analyzed my x-rays, they found that my condition had worsened, and they still had no ideas on how to fix it.
Lost for what else to do, my parents finally decided to take me their local chiropractor. This chiropractor started off the same way as the doctors: with an exam and back x-rays. Then he said something I had never heard before. He told me that my swayed back and impending scoliosis was due to a misalignment of my spine. But that’s not where he stopped. Instead of shooing me out the door with this new information, he took the extra step to “adjust” my spine into the correct position. It was an entirely new sensation for me. My back had never felt so good as it did in that moment. It felt as if my body had found its home for the first time in my life.
Afterwards, the chiropractor showed me some exercises that would further help correct my spine, and through his care and the exercises over the next six years, my now acquired scoliosis began to improve. This chiropractor did what none of the doctors in the hospital were able to do for me. He not only fixed my physical pain, but he gave me hope that I could live a normal, functional, human life. Chiropractic helped me to such a degree that at the age of eighteen, I decided that one day, I would become a chiropractor myself to give others the care and dedication that I was given so that they can live a happy and full life.
