Back pain is an extremely common reason why people come into my office. Most types of back pain come from activities in our daily lives such as work, physical activity (especially weight training), lifting things, poor posture at work, etc. There is some back pain that’s hereditary such as what I had growing up (read more about my story with scoliosis here) With any and all back pain, chiropractic care is a sure-fire way to not only ease the pain, but also help ensure that it doesn’t return!

The middle back is composed of 12 thoracic vertebra that run from the base of your neck down to the lower end of your middle back. Each one of these vertebras has a set of ribs attached to them that make up your ribcage. Usually, one of these vertebrae subluxates due to physical stress such as exercising or moving boxes/equipment, a bad fall, poor seating at work, or emotional stress. When this happens, the joints on the vertebra come out of alignment with the rest of the spine and cause pain as they’re not moving properly with the other vertebrae. This causes tension, pinched nerves, and pain. Since the mid-back vertebrae are connected to your rib cage, mid-back pain can also lead to pain from the joints in the ribcage not functioning properly as well.
Middle back pain ranges from annoying to crucially painful depending on the severity of the cause, the condition, and the lack of proper treatment. The pain doesn’t always have to be in the middle of the back either. Some middle back pain manifests itself as pain in between the shoulder blades. Which is why I treat the root of the problem, not just the symptoms, relieving the pain in all areas of your body.
The good news is that middle back pain is often times not serious, and responds well to chiropractic care. Using a chiropractic adjustment, I gently push on the subluxated vertebrae to move it back into the proper position. This not only gets rid of the pain, but it helps your body function at its best. Even if you have had middle back pain for years, chiropractic care can still help you. It simply takes more time and patience. No matter the case, regular chiropractic adjustments are necessary to keep your middle back healthy and pain-free.

Lower back pain is the #1 reason people seek chiropractic care. If you’ve ever had lower back pain, you’re not alone. 80% of the population experiences lower back pain in their life. This is the most common type of back pain as it’s the most likely to get strained during normal activities, especially lifting equipment or heavy weights.
The lumbar spine (what makes up your lower back) is made up of 5 vertebrae ranging from the small of your back to your tailbone. These vertebrae have an incredibly important job: they carry the weight of your whole body. When they one or multiple of these vertebrae subluxates (misaligns), it usually causes debilitating chronic or aching pain. Lower back pain is the primary reason why people miss work as the pain can be so debilitating that it makes it difficult to walk or even get out of bed.
As the vertebrae in the lower back carry the weight of you whole upper body, that means when they subluxate, it has a ripple effect through your entire body. Pinched the nerves in the lower back can even cause sciatica type pain. That’s because it’s not just the lower back that’s in pain. It’s the rest of the body too.
Fortunately, chiropractic care has been proven to be the most effective treatment for lower back pain. By using chiropractic adjustments, I gently push the subluxated vertebrae back into position, eliminating the origin of the pain and the symptoms. Whether your lower back pain is a recent injury or a long-time companion, chiropractic care can help.

Scoliosis is an interesting condition and an often misunderstood one. Scoliosis is a condition that warps the position of the spine from a normal front to back curvature to a left to right curvature. From the outside, this can look like one shoulder being higher than the other, a titled head, or a constant leaning in a specific direction. Sometimes the spine can look curved from the outside though this is not common.
A diagnosis of scoliosis for a parent can be especially alarming and rightly so. The fear of a child having back surgery and in a back brace is absolutely disheartening. I want to take some time here to discuss what causes scoliosis and how, if you’re a parent, how you can prevent this for your child.
There are two types of scoliosis: idiopathic and acquired. Acquired scoliosis is caused by an everyday fall (or multiple falls) in childhood that causes the spine to get out of alignment. When left untreated, this misaligned or subluxated spine grows into scoliosis over time. The idiopathic scoliosis is hereditary and left untreated, can necessitate surgery and pile up medical bills.
No matter which scoliosis you or your child may have, chiropractic care at Scherping Chiropractic can help. For acquired scoliosis, since it is due to a subluxated spine, I apply gentle pressure through a chiropractic adjustment to move the spine back into proper alignment. Depending on how long the scoliosis has been left untreated, chiropractic care can help quickly, or it may take time and patience as the body readjusts to this new way of life. This is even more reason to take your child to chiropractic care at a young age to correct any subluxations that may have occurred during a fall as they were trying to walk for the first time. Read more about children and chiropractic here for more information.
If you or your child has been diagnosed idiopathic (hereditary) scoliosis, I highly encourage chiropractic care as well. Even though this type of scoliosis cannot be fixed like acquired scoliosis can, chiropractic care can still help ease the pain and the symptoms immensely.
