The answer is more straightforward than many people think. Chiropractic is simply a natural method of healthcare that focuses on treating the cause of physical problems rather than just the symptoms.
Chiropractic centers around the nervous system. The nervous system is the home of your brain, spine, and the millions of nerves that run throughout your body. This incredibly complex and vital system is responsible for controlling and coordinating the function of every cell, tissue, muscle, and organ in your entire body.
Since the nervous system contains your brain (the center of motor skills, learning, and sensory information) the body has formed a skull to protect the brain and twenty-four moveable vertebrae (spinal bones) to surround and support the spinal cord.
Functioning normally, the brain and spine work together to keep you healthy and your body moving freely without any aches or pains. Yet sometimes our daily activities cause these spinal bones (vertebrae) to lose their normal motion or position. When this happens, the vertebrae irritate or choke the delicate tissue in the surrounding area causing discomfort or pain anywhere in the body where the nervous system is present (i.e., everywhere).
This is called vertebral subluxation. It’s a complicated phrase that describes something simple that happens to thousands of people every day. Vertebral subluxation causes an interference between the brain and the tissues of the body leading to malfunction and less than 100% health.
Since there are twenty-four vertebrae and each shift in position can affect any part of the body, I use a thorough health history process as well as physical examinations that include orthopedic and neurological testing to see which or how many vertebrae are out of alignment. I often use X-rays to physically see the location of each vertebra.
Only after a careful review of the examinations and x-rays can I know the exact location of the nervous system disruption. As a chiropractor, I then use my hands to assert a specific force in a specific direction to help pop the vertebrae back into their normal position in the spine. This is called a chiropractic adjustment.
Chiropractic adjustments are where chiropractors (myself included) adjust the vertebrae in the spine back to their normal position or motion to relieve symptoms and pain and improve overall health. While this might sound scary and painful at first, I will personally guarantee that this entire process is safe. All chiropractors do is help your body maintain its natural functions. By treating the root cause of the physical problem by adjusting the spine, the symptoms are healed as well. This means no other medications or treatments are necessary as the body is skilled at healing itself. All chiropractors do is give it a little helpful push.
It might be strange to think about, but chiropractors are licensed doctors and have the same education as medical doctors. The difference is that chiropractors are a uniquely specialized doctor that are qualified to restore the health of your spine. Just as regular dental exams detect and prevent tooth decay, regular spinal screenings at the chiropractic center ensure your spine is remaining healthy. Even if you do not have symptoms, seeing a chiropractor is one of the best ways to help prevent spinal problems in the future.
